Sustainable Mobility and Environment Laboratory (SMEL)

Research

Our research focuses on real-world vehicle and ship emissions, advanced and low-carbon fuels, and heavy-duty engine testing. We combine laboratory experiments with field campaigns to understand emission behavior under practical operating conditions.

Research focus areas

Ship emissions and port studies

Ship emissions and port studies

Field measurements of ship exhaust using barge-mounted capture and treatment systems at port. We quantify real-world emission rates and control system efficiency under operating conditions.

Example publications

Heavy-duty engine and dynamometer testing

Heavy-duty engine and dynamometer testing

Controlled laboratory testing of natural gas and conventional engines on our heavy-duty dynamometer. We evaluate emissions, fuel effects, and aftertreatment performance.

Example publications

  • Example Emissions from natural gas heavy-duty engines (demo)
Tugboat and marine field campaigns

Tugboat and marine field campaigns

Field campaigns on working tugboats and marine vessels to measure emissions during real service duty cycles, complementing laboratory experiments.
